THE GREATEST GIFT YOU CAN GIVE IS YOUR TIME
USE YOUR EXPERIENCE
As someone who has already been through the treatment for bone sarcoma, you are in a unique position to share your experience with others. You might be connected to someone newly diagnosed or with someone who has had multiple surgeries. Either way, they are in need of someone to speak to.
MAKE A DIFFERENCE
The emotional and mental impact of bone sarcoma is felt by many through the whole process of diagnosis, treatment and after treatment. Your peer support is likely to be of enormous value at every stage and will make a huge difference.
DO IT ON YOUR SCHEDULE
We would encourage you to think about the time you could dedicate to supporting a mentee. Everyone’s commitments will be different. Once connected to a mentee, it will be up to the two of you to decide how often to talk and by what means.
WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A MENTOR
Providing emotional support to another person with bone sarcoma may not be easy. Their path could be a difficult one, which means your guidance is even more vital. In order to provide the best support possible we look for more than someone who's had a bone sarcoma. The key values we look for:
Relevant shared experience
Empathy
Listening skills
Communication skills
Respect for confidentiality
Respect for others
Appropriate advice / judgement
Time available
Your own support network
Emotional resilience
